Mathura means the city of Lord Shri Krishna, the city where Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born. This beautiful religious city situated on the banks of Yamuna river is very ancient, whose mention is also found in 'Ramayana'.

Mathura is considered a famous pilgrimage center for Hindus. History of Mathura

Mathura is considered to be a very ancient city of India, which has been the birth place of Lord Shri Krishna. In history, this city has been addressed by many names like Mathupuri, Sursen and Madhunagari. Apart from this, Mathura is one of the seven most sacred places of Hindus. Whatever it is like this, Kashi, Ayodhya, Dwarka, Haridwar, Kanchipuram, Ujjain and Mathura itself, this city is so old that its mention is also found in Ramayana where this city has been called Mathupur. Later Mathura remained under the Kushan rulers where this city mainly emerged. The most famous ruler of the Kushan rulers and their descendants, Kanishka, built many Buddhist monuments which can still be seen in the Mathura museum. In history, the name of Mathura has been associated with Lord Shri Krishna. This place is considered one of the holy places of the Hindus. It is said that Mathura was established in the month of Shravan, hence there is a tradition of celebrating festivals etc. in this month. Apart from Hindus, this place is also revered by Jain and Buddhist followers.

The then Muslim rulers had settled the capital Delhi and Agra on both sides of the place where the city of Mathura is situated. At that time the Muslim rulers wreaked havoc on this city many times. The city is believed to have been attacked for the first time in 1018 by Ghazni. After this, Aurangzeb also caused a lot of damage to this place. Ahmadshah Abdali's soldiers burnt a large part of the city, playing Holi of blood in Mathura.
