The district is divided into six tehsils - Bilhaur, Ghatampur, Kanpur, Shivrajpur, Sisamau, and Rasulabad - and has a total of 20 blocks. The district is primarily urban, with the city of Kanpur being a major industrial and commercial hub.Kanpur Nagar is known for its leather industry and is often referred to as the "Leather City of the World". The city has several important tourist attractions, including the Moti Jheel, Allen Forest Zoo, and the Kanpur Memorial Church.
