In the 18th century, the city was part of the Maratha Empire and later became part of the British Raj. After India's independence, Bulandshahr became a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Geography

Bulandshahr is located at an altitude of 195 meters above sea level. The city is situated on the banks of the river Kali and is surrounded by the Ganges-Yamuna Doab to the north and the Yamuna River to the east. The city covers an area of 4,326 km² and is bordered by the districts of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Hapur, Aligarh, and Bijnor.

As per the 2011 census, Bulandshahr had a population of 3,498,507, making it one of the most populous districts in Uttar Pradesh. The city has a literacy rate of 63.68%, with the male literacy rate being 72.87% and the female literacy rate being 54.03%. The city has a sex ratio of 894 females per 1000 males, which is below the national average.

The economy of Bulandshahr is primarily based on agriculture, with wheat, paddy, sugarcane, and mustard being the main crops grown in the region.
