History

Siddharthnagar district was carved out of the Basti district on 29th December 1988. The district is named after Lord Buddha, who was born in Lumbini, which is now in Nepal. It is said that Gautama Buddha had visited Kapilavastu, which is now in Siddharthnagar district, several times during his lifetime. Siddharthnagar was part of the ancient kingdom of Kosala and was ruled by various dynasties, including the Mauryas, Guptas, and Kushans. The district also played an important role in the Indian struggle for independence. The district is home to several freedom fighters, including Raja Ravi Shankar, who was instrumental in the Quit India Movement.

Geography

Siddharthnagar district is located in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh and is bordered by Nepal to the north and east. The district covers an area of 2,752 square kilometers and is situated at an altitude of 91 meters above sea level. The district is primarily flat with fertile plains and is drained by several rivers, including the Rapti, which is a tributary of the Ghaghara river. The district experiences a hot and humid climate, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 44°C. The monsoon season in Siddharthnagar district starts from June and continues till September.

The district is also known for its silk production, with several households engaged in sericulture.
