History

Kaushambi has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. The city was founded by King Kush, the son of Lord Rama, according to Hindu mythology. The city was an important center of the Vedic civilization and was mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics. It is believed that Lord Buddha visited Kaushambi several times during his lifetime and gave some of his famous sermons here.

During the Mauryan period, Kaushambi was an important center of trade and commerce. Emperor Ashoka built a pillar here, which still stands today and is considered one of the finest examples of Mauryan art. After the decline of the Mauryan empire, Kaushambi was ruled by a series of different dynasties, including the Kushans, the Guptas, and the Mughals.

Geography

Kaushambi is located in the fertile plains of the Ganges-Yamuna doab region. The district is divided into two parts by the river Yamuna. The eastern part of the district is dominated by a vast alluvial plain, while the western part is hilly and covered with forests. The district is largely agricultural, with the main crops being wheat, rice, sugarcane, and vegetables.
