History

The history of Madhubani can be traced back to the ancient kingdom of Mithila, which was ruled by the Janakas. According to Hindu mythology, Janakpur, the capital of Mithila, was the birthplace of Sita, the wife of Lord Rama. Madhubani was a part of the Mithila kingdom and was ruled by various dynasties, including the Mauryas, the Guptas, the Karnatas, and the Palas.

During the medieval period, Madhubani was ruled by the Rajputs and the Muslim rulers of Bengal. In the 16th century, the Mughal emperor Akbar conquered Mithila and appointed a governor to administer the region. The British East India Company took control of Madhubani in the 18th century, and it became a part of British India.

Geography

Madhubani is located in the northern part of Bihar and is bounded by Nepal to the north, Sitamarhi district to the east, Darbhanga district to the south, and Samastipur district to the west. The district covers an area of 3,501 square kilometers and is situated at an altitude of 52 meters above sea level. The district is primarily an agricultural region and is known for its fertile soil and abundant water resources.

As per the 2011 Census, the population of Madhubani district was 4,476,120, making it the second-most populous district in Bihar after Patna. The district has a literacy rate of 47.93%, which is below the national average. The majority of the population in Madhubani is engaged in agriculture and allied activities.
