History

The history of Banka dates back to the ancient period. It is said that the district was part of the Magadha empire ruled by the Mauryas, Guptas, and Palas. During the medieval period, the region was ruled by the Mughals and later by the British. Banka was a part of the Bhagalpur district until 1991 when it was carved out as a separate district. The district has played an important role in the freedom struggle of India. Several freedom fighters like Shaheed Veer Kunwar Singh, Tilkamanjhi Bhagalpur, and Swami Sahajanand Saraswati were born in this region.

Geography

Banka district covers an area of 3,019 square kilometers and is located between 24°54' and 25°37' north latitude and 86°13' and 87°13' east longitude. The district is situated at an average altitude of 140 meters above sea level. The district is surrounded by hills and mountains on three sides, and the Ganges river flows through the northern part of the district. The Kharagpur hills, part of the Chhota Nagpur plateau, are situated in the southern part of the district. The district has a moderate climate with an average temperature of 26°C.

As per the 2011 census, the population of Banka district is 20,20,946, with a population density of 671 persons per square kilometer. The district has a literacy rate of 56.51%, which is lower than the state average of 61.80%. The majority of the population is engaged in agriculture and allied activities. The district has a predominantly rural population, with only a few urban centers. The district is home to people from different castes and communities. The major communities are Bhumihar, Rajput, Yadav, Muslim, and Dalit.

The economy of Banka is primarily based on agriculture and allied activities. The district is known for its horticultural crops, such as mango, litchi, guava, and banana. The district is also known for its mineral resources, including bauxite, mica, and coal. The district has a few small-scale industries such as handloom, handicrafts, and agro-based industries.
