The district is surrounded by the districts of Dindori, Mandla, Bilaspur, and Shahdol. Anuppur is a land of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical significance. 

History

Anuppur has a rich historical and cultural heritage that dates back to ancient times. The district was originally a part of the Gondwana kingdom and was ruled by various dynasties such as the Mauryas, the Guptas, the Rajputs, and the Marathas. During the British rule, Anuppur was a part of the Central Provinces and was under the administrative control of the British Indian government. After India gained independence in 1947, Anuppur became a part of Madhya Pradesh.

Geography

Anuppur is located in the eastern part of Madhya Pradesh and covers an area of 3,711 square kilometers. The district is situated at an elevation of 491 meters above sea level and is located between 22.28 degrees to 23.21 degrees north latitude and 81.14 degrees to 82.14 degrees east longitude. Anuppur is surrounded by hills and forests, and the Satpura range runs through the district. The Tamsa river is the main river that flows through the district, and it is a tributary of the Son river.

Demographics

As per the 2011 census, Anuppur has a population of 749,521 people. The district has a population density of 202 people per square kilometer, and the sex ratio is 1000:977. The literacy rate in Anuppur is 63.29%, which is lower than the national average of 74.04%. The majority of the population in Anuppur belongs to the tribal communities, and the main languages spoken in the district are Hindi and Gondi.

Economy

The economy of Anuppur is primarily agricultural. The district is known for its production of paddy, wheat, maize, and pulses. Apart from agriculture, mining is also an important source of income for the people of Anuppur. The district is rich in mineral resources such as coal, bauxite, and limestone, which are mined by various companies. The district also has a small-scale industrial sector, which includes industries such as handloom weaving, carpentry, and pottery.

Culture

Anuppur has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. The district is home to various tribal communities such as Gonds, Baigas, and Korkus, who have their unique cultural traditions, customs, and beliefs. The main festivals celebrated in Anuppur are Diwali, Holi, and Dussehra. The tribal communities in Anuppur have their unique festivals such as the Bhagoriya festival, which is celebrated by the Bhilala tribe. The Bhagoriya festival is a time when young men and women of the tribe choose their partners for marriage. The traditional dance forms of Anuppur include Karma, Saila, and Matki. The handicrafts of Anuppur include terracotta pottery, bamboo crafts, and handloom weaving.
