Nayagarh was originally a part of the Kalinga empire, which was ruled by King Kharavela in the 1st century BC. Later, the district came under the rule of the Maratha Empire and was known as "Nayak Nagari". During the British rule, Nayagarh was a part of the Khurda district. After independence, Nayagarh became a separate district in 1992.

According to the 2011 census, Nayagarh district has a population of approximately 962,215 people. The majority of the population belongs to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The official language spoken in Nayagarh is Odia.
