Jharsuguda is located at a latitude of 21.85° N and longitude of 84.01° E. The city is situated at an average elevation of 218 meters above sea level. The Mahanadi River flows through the western part of the district, while the Ib River flows through the eastern part of the district. The Hirakud Dam, which is one of the longest dams in the world, is located around 40 kilometers from Jharsuguda.

History

Jharsuguda has a rich history dating back to the 6th century AD. The region was ruled by various dynasties including the Mauryas, Guptas, and the Eastern Gangas. During the British rule, Jharsuguda was a part of the Sambalpur district. After India gained independence in 1947, Jharsuguda became a part of the state of Odisha.
