The district headquarters is located in the town of Kendrapara, which is also the largest town in the district. Kendrapara is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the east, Bhadrak district to the north, Jagatsinghpur district to the south, and Cuttack district to the west.

The district has a total area of 2,143 square kilometers and a population of over 1.5 million people as per the 2011 Census of India. The literacy rate of the district is 85.92%, which is higher than the state average of 72.87%. The majority of the population in the district belongs to the Hindu religion, followed by Islam and Christianity. The official language of the district is Odia, and Hindi and English are also spoken.
