Rayagada was ruled by various dynasties, including the Cholas, Gangas, and Suryavamsi kings. In the 16th century, the district was ruled by the Gajapati Kings of Puri. Later, it was under the control of the British and played a vital role during India's freedom struggle. Rayagada was part of the Madras Presidency until 1936 when it was transferred to Odisha.

It is located at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level and covers an area of 7,584 square kilometers. The district is primarily hilly and is surrounded by forests, hills, and rivers. The Mahendragiri Hills, a part of the Eastern Ghats, runs through the district, making it a popular destination for trekking and adventure enthusiasts. The district is also home to many rivers, including the Nagavalli, Bansadhara, and Poteru.
