The history of Bargarh reflects the art and architecture of the Chauhan dynasty in Odisha. It got medieval history from the kilo built by the Chauhan dynasty. It is believed from an 11th century AD inscriptions that the original name of this place was Bahgar Kota. Chauhan Raja Bal Ramdev of Sambalpur district ruled this province named Bargarh. The walls of the old fort can be seen from the Jeera river, towards the plane of Ambapali. The last Chauhan king gave this place in Maufi Free Hall, son of Narayana Das Balochi Das, who was killed in action by the Gonds. Another part of the district called Borsambar was formerly the headquarters of the Zamidari which spread over an area of 2178 square kilometers Its history suggests that Buddhism had a role in defining people s lifestyles for a short period of time.
