Balangir is a district located in the western part of the Indian state of Odisha. It is located at a distance of approximately 320 kilometers from the state capital, Bhubaneswar. The district headquarters of Balangir is also named Balangir, which is the largest town in the district. The town is situated on the banks of the River Sono, which is a tributary of the Mahanadi River.

Geography and Climate

Balangir district has a total area of approximately 6,575 square kilometers. It is bounded by the districts of Sonepur to the east, Nuapada to the west, Sambalpur to the north, and Kalahandi to the south. The district is situated on the plateau of Western Odisha, which has an average elevation of 244 meters above sea level. The region is characterized by undulating terrain and is largely covered with forests.

The climate of Balangir is characterized by hot summers and mild winters. The temperature in summer can rise up to 45 degrees Celsius, while in winter, it can drop down to as low as 10 degrees Celsius. The monsoon season starts in June and continues till September. The district receives an average annual rainfall of around 1,000 millimeters.

The district has a sex ratio of 993 females for every 1000 males, which is higher than the state average. The literacy rate in the district is 63.4%, which is lower than the state average.
