The district is bounded by the Bay of Bengal on the east and has a coastline of about 60 kilometers. The district is divided into three physiographic regions, namely the coastal plains, the central highlands, and the western undulating uplands. The coastal plains are mostly low-lying and fertile and are used for cultivation of paddy, coconut, and cashew. The central highlands are hilly and forested, and the western undulating uplands are mostly dry and barren.

As per the 2011 Census of India, the population of Ganjam district was 3,520,151, making it the most populous district in Odisha. The district has a population density of 436 persons per square kilometer. The district has a literacy rate of 72.6%, which is higher than the state average of 72.9%. The majority of the population in the district are Hindus, followed by Muslims and Christians.

Economy

The economy of Ganjam district is primarily based on agriculture, with paddy being the major crop. Other important crops include sugarcane, coconut, cashew, and groundnut. The district is also known for its fishing industry, with fishing being a major occupation of the coastal areas.
