History

The city of Tarn Taran has a rich historical background. It was founded by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, in the 16th century. The city was named after a sacred pool named Tarn which was excavated by the Guru himself. The city was later developed by his successor, Guru Hargobind Sahib. The city became a center for Sikh learning, and many Sikh scholars and intellectuals were based here.

In the 18th century, the city witnessed several battles and conflicts during the reign of the Sikh empire. In the 19th century, Tarn Taran was captured by the British, and it remained under British rule until India gained independence in 1947. In 2006, Tarn Taran was declared a district, and the city became the district headquarters.

Geography

Tarn Taran is located at an altitude of 214 meters above sea level. The city is situated on the banks of the river Kasur Nala, which is a tributary of the river Ravi. The climate of Tarn Taran is generally hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 45°C. The city is surrounded by agricultural land, and the main crops grown here are wheat, rice, and sugarcane.

As per the 2011 census, the population of Tarn Taran was 118,464. The city has a literacy rate of 75.2%, with male literacy at 79.9% and female literacy at 69.8%. The majority of the population in Tarn Taran are Sikhs, with a small percentage of Hindus and Muslims.

The economy of Tarn Taran is primarily based on agriculture. The city is known for its high-quality wheat, rice, and sugarcane. The city has several small-scale industries, including cotton ginning and pressing, flour mills, and rice mills. The city also has a wholesale grain market, which is one of the largest in the region. Tarn Taran is also famous for its handicrafts, including Phulkari embroidery, which is a traditional Punjabi embroidery style.
