Sangrur is a city located in the south-eastern part of Punjab, India. It is the headquarters of the Sangrur district and is situated at a distance of approximately 75 kilometers from the city of Ludhiana. History

Sangrur has a long and illustrious history that dates back to ancient times. The region was ruled by various dynasties, including the Mauryans, Guptas, and Kushans. During the medieval period, it came under the control of the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughals, and the Afghans. In the 18th century, Sangrur was annexed by the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. After the British colonial rule in India, Sangrur became a part of the Patiala and East Punjab States Union. Following the partition of India in 1947, Sangrur became a part of the Indian state of Punjab.

Geography

Sangrur is situated in the southeastern part of Punjab, at an altitude of 232 meters above sea level. It covers an area of 4,375 square kilometers and is surrounded by the districts of Ludhiana, Barnala, Patiala, and Fatehgarh Sahib. The region is known for its fertile land, which is suitable for growing crops such as wheat, rice, cotton, and sugarcane. The Sangrur district is divided into three sub-divisions: Sangrur, Sunam, and Dhuri.

Demographics

As per the 2011 census, the population of Sangrur was 1,655,169, with a literacy rate of 68.54%. The city has a male-female ratio of 895:1000. The majority of the population in Sangrur is Sikh, with a significant minority of Hindus and Muslims. Punjabi is the most commonly spoken language in the region, although Hindi and English are also widely spoken.

Sangrur is an important center of commerce and agriculture in Punjab. The region is known for its fertile land and has a large number of farmers who grow crops such as wheat, rice, cotton, and sugarcane. The city is also home to several small and medium-sized industries, including textile mills, sugar mills, and steel mills. The region is also known for its handicrafts, including Phulkari embroidery, which is a popular form of embroidery in Punjab.

The city is also home to several historic gurdwaras and temples, including the Shri Hanuman Mandir, which is dedicated to the Hindu god Hanuman, and the Gurdwara Nanakiana Sahib, which is dedicated to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. The region is also known for its folk music and dance, including Bhangra, Giddha, and Jhumar.
