Patiala has a long and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. According to legend, the city was founded by Baba Ala Singh, a chieftain of the Sidhu Jat clan, in 1763. He established his capital at Qila Mubarak, which still stands today as one of the most famous landmarks in Patiala. Baba Ala Singh was succeeded by his son, Amar Singh, who expanded the city and built many of its iconic structures, including the Baradari Gardens and the Sheesh Mahal.

Under the leadership of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, who ruled from 1900 to 1938, Patiala became one of the most prosperous and culturally vibrant cities in India.
