History

Patiala has a long and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. According to legend, the city was founded by Baba Ala Singh, a chieftain of the Sidhu Jat clan, in 1763. He established his capital at Qila Mubarak, which still stands today as one of the most famous landmarks in Patiala. Baba Ala Singh was succeeded by his son, Amar Singh, who expanded the city and built many of its iconic structures, including the Baradari Gardens and the Sheesh Mahal.

Under the leadership of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, who ruled from 1900 to 1938, Patiala became one of the most prosperous and culturally vibrant cities in India. He was a great patron of the arts and sciences and established the prestigious Patiala Gharana of music. He also built the famous Moti Bagh Palace, which today serves as a museum and a popular tourist attraction.

Geography

Patiala is located in the south-eastern part of the state of Punjab, and is bordered by the districts of Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Mohali. It is situated on the banks of the river Ghaggar, which flows through the city and provides water for irrigation and other purposes. The city covers an area of approximately 1,236 square kilometers and has a population of over 5,00,000.
