Kapurthala is a city in the Indian state of Punjab, located in the northwestern region of the country. It is the administrative headquarters of Kapurthala district and is situated around 20 km south of Jalandhar. History

The city of Kapurthala has a rich and diverse history dating back to the 11th century when it was known as Kapor Thal, which means 'Tank of Sacred Water.' According to legend, the town was founded by Rana Kapur, a Rajput ruler who named it after himself. During the reign of the Mughal Empire, Kapurthala was part of the Lahore province and was ruled by various local chieftains.

In the early 19th century, the city was under the control of the Sikh Empire, and it was annexed by the British in 1846 after the Second Anglo-Sikh War. Kapurthala was made a princely state under British rule, and its ruler, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, played a significant role in modernizing the city by constructing several palaces, gardens, and buildings.

Geography

Kapurthala is located at an altitude of 225 meters above sea level and covers an area of around 152 square kilometers. The city is situated on the fertile plains of the Doaba region, which is known for its rich soil and agricultural productivity. The city is bordered by the Sutlej River to the west and the Beas River to the south, which provides irrigation water to the surrounding agricultural lands.

Demographics

As per the 2011 Census of India, Kapurthala had a population of around 101,000 people. The city has a predominantly Punjabi population, and the main languages spoken are Punjabi and Hindi. The literacy rate in Kapurthala is around 82%, which is higher than the national average.

Economy

Agriculture is the primary source of income for the people of Kapurthala. The city is known for its production of rice, wheat, sugarcane, and vegetables. In recent years, the city has seen a significant growth in the manufacturing sector, with several small and medium enterprises being set up in the region.
