Pathankot is a city located in the Indian state of Punjab. It is the headquarters of the Pathankot district and is situated at the intersection of three states - Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh. The city is strategically located at the foot of the Himalayas and is an important trade and transit hub for the region. 

History

The history of Pathankot can be traced back to the 2nd century BC when it was a part of the Mauryan Empire. It was later ruled by the Gupta Empire and the Kushan Empire. During the medieval period, Pathankot was a part of the Mughal Empire and later the Sikh Empire. It was also an important centre for the British during their rule in India.

In the early 20th century, Pathankot was a part of the Gurdaspur district in British India. After India gained independence in 1947, Pathankot became a part of the newly created state of Punjab. In 2011, Pathankot became a separate district in Punjab.

Geography

Pathankot is located at an altitude of 332 meters above sea level and covers an area of 929 sq km. It is situated at the confluence of three rivers - Ravi, Beas, and Chakki. The city is surrounded by the Shivalik range of the Himalayas to the north and the Kangra Valley to the south. The climate of Pathankot is characterized by hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in summers ranges from 30 to 40 degrees Celsius, while in winters, it ranges from 0 to 15 degrees Celsius.

Demographics

As per the 2011 Census of India, the population of Pathankot was 159,820. The city has a literacy rate of 84.13%, which is higher than the national average. Punjabi is the most commonly spoken language in Pathankot, followed by Hindi and English. The city is predominantly Hindu, with a significant population of Sikhs and Muslims as well.

Economy

Pathankot is an important trade and transit hub for the region. The city is well connected by road and rail to major cities in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh. It is also an important military base for the Indian Army and Air Force. The city has a thriving agriculture sector, with crops such as wheat, rice, and sugarcane being grown in the region. The city is also home to several small and medium-sized industries, including textile mills, food processing units, and engineering firms.
