Fatehgarh Sahib is a city located in the northern Indian state of Punjab. The city is the administrative headquarters of the Fatehgarh Sahib district, which was formed in 1992. The district is named after the historic town of Fatehgarh Sahib, which is located within its boundaries.

History

Fatehgarh Sahib has a rich history that dates back to the Mughal era. The town was originally known as Sarhand, and it was an important center of Sufi culture during the reign of Emperor Akbar. However, in 1705, the town witnessed a tragic event that changed its destiny forever. Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, was betrayed by his former cook and was attacked by Mughal soldiers along with his family members. The Guru's two younger sons, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, were bricked alive by the Mughals, and the Guru himself passed away a few days later due to his injuries. The town was then renamed Fatehgarh Sahib in honor of the two young martyrs.

Geography

Fatehgarh Sahib is located in the northern part of Punjab, and it covers an area of around 1,180 square kilometers. The city is situated on the banks of the Sirhind Canal, which is a tributary of the Sutlej River. The city is surrounded by several small hills, and the climate is generally hot and dry during the summer months and cold and foggy during the winter season.

As per the 2011 census, the population of Fatehgarh Sahib was around 600,000. The majority of the population comprises Sikhs, who account for around 80% of the total population. Hindus and Muslims are the other major religious groups in the city. Punjabi is the most widely spoken language, followed by Hindi and English.
