Mohali, also known as Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, is a city in the northern Indian state of Punjab. It is a rapidly developing urban area located near the city of Chandigarh, which is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana states. Mohali was named after Sahibzada Ajit Singh, the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh, who was killed in the Battle of Chamkaur in 1704. Mohali is famous for its world-class sports facilities and is also a hub of the information technology industry.

History

Mohali has a rich history that dates back to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. The region was later ruled by the Mauryan and Gupta dynasties before the arrival of the Mughals. In the 18th century, the Sikh warrior, Banda Singh Bahadur, captured the area and established a Sikh rule. Later, the British took control of the region, and it became a part of the Punjab province.

After the partition of India in 1947, Mohali was included in the Indian state of Punjab. It remained a small town until the 1980s when the Punjab government decided to develop the area as an industrial hub. Today, Mohali is a rapidly growing city with a population of over 1.2 million people.

Geography

Mohali is located in the foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas. The city is situated at an altitude of 310 meters above sea level and covers an area of 109 sq km. The Sutlej river flows to the north of Mohali, and the city is surrounded by the districts of Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Chandigarh.

Demographics

The population of Mohali is estimated to be around 1.2 million people, with a male-to-female ratio of 53:47. The majority of the population is Punjabi-speaking, with a significant number of people also speaking Hindi and English. Mohali has a literacy rate of over 85%, with a large number of people working in the information technology and service sectors.

Economy

Mohali is a major industrial hub and is home to several multinational companies, including Quark, Infosys, and Convergys. The city has a thriving information technology industry, which has helped to create a large number of jobs and attract investment to the area. Other major industries in Mohali include pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering.

Culture

Mohali has a rich cultural heritage and is known for its vibrant Punjabi culture. The city is home to several gurdwaras, including the Gurudwara Amb Sahib, which is believed to be the site where Guru Gobind Singh rested during the Battle of Chamkaur.
