History

The name "Mansa" is believed to have originated from the word "Mansa," which means "proud" or "self-respect" in the local language. The city has a rich history that dates back to the Harappan civilization, which is evident from the ruins of the Indus Valley Civilization found in the area. The city was also a part of the Mauryan Empire and later the Gupta Empire. The city has also witnessed the rule of various other dynasties, including the Rajputs, Mughals, and Sikhs.

In the early 19th century, the region came under the British rule, and Mansa was made a part of the princely state of Patiala. In 1947, after the partition of India, Mansa became a part of Punjab state.

Geography

Mansa is located at an altitude of 219 meters above sea level and covers an area of around 2,174 square kilometers. It is situated in the southwestern part of Punjab and shares its borders with the districts of Bathinda, Sangrur, and Barnala. The city is located on the banks of the Ghaggar river, which is the main source of water for the region.

Demographics

As per the 2011 Census, the population of Mansa was around 99,000, with a male-female ratio of 1000:925. The literacy rate of the city is 69%, with males having a literacy rate of 74% and females having a literacy rate of 63%. The majority of the population in Mansa is Punjabi-speaking, and the primary religion is Sikhism, followed by Hinduism and Islam.

Agriculture is the primary source of income in Mansa, with the majority of the population being involved in farming. The major crops grown in the region include wheat, rice, cotton, and sugarcane. The city is also known for its hosiery industry, and there are several small-scale industries that contribute to the local economy. The city is well-connected to the rest of the country through roads and railways, which has led to the growth of trade and commerce.

Mansa has a rich cultural heritage that is reflected in its music, dance, and cuisine. The region is known for its folk music, which includes songs and ballads that narrate the stories of the region. Bhangra is a popular dance form in Mansa, and it is performed during various festivals and celebrations. The cuisine of Mansa is a blend of Punjabi and North Indian flavors, with dishes like makki di roti, sarson da saag, and lassi being the most popular.

The city is home to several historical monuments, including the Mansa Devi Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Mansa Devi. The temple is located on the banks of the Ghaggar river and is believed to be around 200 years old. Another popular attraction in Mansa is the Harappan site of Sanghol, which is located around 40 kilometers from the city. The site is believed to date back to the Harappan civilization and is one of the most well-preserved sites in the region.
