Bathinda, also spelled as Bhatinda, is a city located in the Indian state of Punjab. With a population of over 3.6 lakh people, it is one of the major cities of the state and is known for its historical and cultural significance. 

History

Bathinda has a rich historical legacy that dates back to the 3rd century BC. The city was originally known as Bhatti, named after a Rajput clan that ruled over the region. In ancient times, Bathinda was an important center of trade and commerce and was situated on the crossroads of major trade routes that linked Central Asia with India.

During the Mauryan Empire, the region was under the control of Emperor Ashoka, who is said to have visited the city to propagate his message of peace and non-violence. Later, Bathinda came under the rule of various dynasties such as the Guptas, Kushans, and Huns.

In the medieval period, Bathinda was a major center of Sikhism and played a crucial role in the history of the religion. The city was the site of several battles between the Sikh forces and the Mughal Empire, including the famous Battle of Muktsar in 1705, where the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, fought against the Mughal forces.

Geography

Bathinda is located in the southern part of Punjab, near the border with the neighboring state of Haryana. The city is situated on the banks of the Sutlej river and is surrounded by agricultural land. The climate of Bathinda is characterized by hot summers and cold winters, with temperatures ranging from 40°C in summers to 4°C in winters.

Bathinda is a cosmopolitan city with a diverse population. According to the 2011 census, the city has a population of over 3.6 lakh people, with Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims being the major religious groups. Punjabi is the most widely spoken language in the city, followed by Hindi and English.

Bathinda is an important economic center of Punjab and is known for its agriculture-based economy. The city is a major producer of cotton, sugarcane, and food grains, and is home to several agro-processing industries. In recent years, Bathinda has also emerged as an important hub of the oil and gas industry, with several refineries and petrochemical plants located in and around the city.
