History

The history of Dharwad dates back to the 12th century when it was ruled by the Chalukyas. Later on, it came under the rule of the Rashtrakutas and then the Hoysalas. During the 16th century, Dharwad was conquered by the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. In the 18th century, the city was taken over by the Marathas, and in the 19th century, it was ruled by the British. After India gained independence in 1947, Dharwad became a part of the newly formed state of Karnataka.

Dharwad is located at an altitude of 670 meters above sea level. It has an area of 200.23 square kilometers and is situated in the northern part of Karnataka. The city is surrounded by hills and forests, and the climate is moderate throughout the year. The average temperature in Dharwad ranges from 20°C to 34°C.
