History of Chickmagalur

The history of Chickmagalur can be traced back to the 3rd century AD, when it was part of the Mauryan Empire. Later, it came under the rule of the Chalukyas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagar empires. In the 16th century, the region was conquered by the Muslim ruler Hyder Ali, who was succeeded by his son Tipu Sultan.

During the British Raj, Chickmagalur was one of the first places where coffee was cultivated in India. The British established coffee plantations in the region, which led to the economic development of the area. Chickmagalur was also the birthplace of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Geography of Chickmagalur

Chickmagalur is situated at an altitude of 3,400 feet above sea level in the Western Ghats. It is spread over an area of 7,201 square kilometers and shares its borders with the districts of Shimoga, Davangere, Chitradurga, Hassan, and Udupi. The district is divided into three regions: Malnad, Maidan, and Coastal. The Malnad region is characterized by hills, forests, and waterfalls, while the Maidan region is a flatland with a few hills. The Coastal region, which is the smallest of the three, has a narrow coastal strip.

The district is home to several rivers, including the Tunga, Bhadra, and Hemavathi. These rivers originate from the Western Ghats and flow through the district before joining the Cauvery River.

Demographics of Chickmagalur

As per the 2011 Census, the population of Chickmagalur district was 1,137,753, with a population density of 158 persons per square kilometer. The literacy rate was 77.26%, which is higher than the national average. Kannada is the official language of the district, but other languages like English, Hindi, and Urdu are also spoken.

The majority of the population in Chickmagalur are Hindus, followed by Muslims, Christians, and Jains. The district is also home to several tribal communities like the Soligas, Bettakurubas, and Yeravas.

Economy of Chickmagalur

The economy of Chickmagalur is primarily based on agriculture and tourism. The district is known for its coffee plantations, which cover an area of 65,000 hectares. The coffee produced in Chickmagalur is of high quality and is exported to several countries. Apart from coffee, the district also produces spices, rubber, and silk.

Tourism is another important sector in Chickmagalur, with thousands of tourists visiting the district every year. The district is home to several scenic destinations like Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri, Kemmanagundi, and Kudremukh.
