Kumbhalgarh is a historical fort located in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, India. It is situated on a hill at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level and is surrounded by a 36-kilometer-long wall, making it the second-longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. Kumbhalgarh was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha and is known for its rich history and architectural marvels. 

History of Kumbhalgarh

Kumbhalgarh was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, who was the ruler of the Mewar kingdom. It is said that Rana Kumbha had a dream in which he saw the location of the fort. He decided to build the fort at that very spot and called it Kumbhalgarh, named after himself.

The construction of the fort began in 1443 and was completed in 1458. The fort was built to protect the Mewar kingdom from the invading forces of the Mughals and other neighboring kingdoms. The fort was also used as a place of refuge for the royal family during times of war.

Kumbhalgarh was attacked several times throughout history but was never conquered. In 1527, the fort was attacked by the Mughal emperor, Babur, but he was unable to capture it. The fort was also attacked by the Marathas and the British, but they too were unable to conquer it.

Architecture of Kumbhalgarh

Kumbhalgarh is known for its impressive architecture, which is a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles. The fort has seven gates, each with its own significance. The most famous of these gates is the Hanuman Pol, which is named after the monkey god Hanuman. The gate is adorned with a statue of Hanuman and is said to bring good luck to those who pass through it.

The fort also has several temples and palaces, which are architectural marvels in themselves. The most famous of these temples is the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is known for its intricate carvings and beautiful architecture.

The palace inside the fort is also worth a visit. It was built by Rana Kumbha and has several rooms and halls. The palace also has a balcony that offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.
