In 1807, Rajkot was founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja of the Jadeja clan. The city was named after Raju Sandhi, who was the founder of Rajkot. In 1947, Rajkot became a part of the Indian Union after India's independence.

Rajkot is located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat and is situated at an altitude of 134 meters above sea level. The city is surrounded by hills and forests on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other side. The city is located on the banks of the Aji and Nyari rivers.
