Surendranagar is a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat, located about 130 kilometers northwest of Ahmedabad. The city is the headquarters of the Surendranagar district and is situated at an elevation of 71 meters above sea level. History

The region of Surendranagar has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Stone Age. The city was ruled by various dynasties, including the Mauryas, Guptas, Chavdas, Solankis, Vaghelas, and the Mughals.

In the 18th century, Surendranagar was ruled by the Jhala Rajputs, who were known for their valor and administrative skills. The city was named after Surendrasinh, a Jhala Rajput ruler who founded the city in 1750.

During the British Raj, Surendranagar was a part of the Bombay Presidency. The city played an important role in the Indian independence movement, with many freedom fighters hailing from the region.

Geography

Surendranagar is located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat and is situated on the banks of the Bhogavo River. The city has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cool winters. The monsoon season lasts from June to September, and the city receives an average rainfall of 510 mm.

The city is surrounded by hills and forests, and the Bhavnagar forest is located to the east of the city. The region is rich in minerals such as limestone, salt, and gypsum.

Demographics

As per the 2011 census, the population of Surendranagar was 1,75,000. The city has a literacy rate of 82.32% and has a male-female ratio of 52:48. The majority of the population in the city is Hindu, followed by Muslims and Jains.

Economy

Surendranagar is a major center for cotton and textiles, with many textile mills and factories located in and around the city. The city is also known for its dairy products and is home to the Surendranagar District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, which is one of the largest milk producers' organizations in Gujarat.

Salt production is another major industry in Surendranagar, with the Little Rann of Kutch located nearby. The region is also known for its handicrafts, including bandhani (tie and dye) and embroidery.

Culture

The culture of Surendranagar is a mix of various influences, including Hindu, Jain, Muslim, and tribal cultures. The city is known for its vibrant festivals, including Navratri, Diwali, and Holi. The city has a rich tradition of folk music and dance, with the garba and dandiya raas being popular dance forms.

The region is known for its handicrafts, including bandhani (tie and dye) and embroidery. The city is also known for its cuisine, which includes a variety of vegetarian dishes such as dhokla, fafda, and theplas.

Surendranagar has several historical and cultural attractions that attract tourists from all over India. The city is home to the Rajendra Singhji Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts related to the Jhala Rajputs and the history of Surendranagar.

The city is also home to the 12th-century Bhavnath Mahadev Temple, which is located on a hill and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The Surya Mandir and the Gayatri Mandir are other popular temples in the city.
