Known as Diamond City, Surat is a famous city in Gujarat located on the banks of the Tapti River near the Arabian Sea. It is also suitably called the Diamond City of India as it is a major gemstone centre where about 92% of the world s diamonds are cut.

Situated on the banks of the Tapti River, Surat city is located at an altitude of 43 feet above sea level. The flat plains of the city cover the entire area of 320 sq km. Surat has a moderate climate and faces normal temperatures throughout the year. Summer does not heat up because the average temperature does not exceed 37 ° C. Winters see a measurable mercury level of 17 °C.
Surat served as a major port in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is also mentioned in the great Hindu epic Mahabharata, it is believed that since Lord Krishna stayed here for a break while going from Mathura to Dwarka with his cows, the footprints of his cows are still visible to the devotees.
