Porbandar is an important seaside town of Gujarat, India. The city has been mentioned in history since the time of Mahabharata, as the city is the birth place of Sudama, a friend of Lord Krishna. And traces of Harappan civilization have also been found here. The city of Porbandar serves as the administrative headquarters of the Porbandar district.
The city is mostly famous for being the hometown of Sudama, a friend of the legendary freedom fighter, Lord Krishna and Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi). Porbandar was controlled by the Jethwa Rajputs from around the 16th century and was the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Porbandar (1785–1948) before joining independent India. The Father of the Nation, Gandhiji was born in 1869 in Porbandar. His birthplace and neighboring Kirti Mandir, a museum dedicated to Gandhi, are major tourist destinations.
