History

The region was ruled by various dynasties including the Satavahanas, Vakatakas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, and Yadavas. The region was later ruled by the Bahmani Sultanate and the Mughal Empire.

During the British colonial period, Wardha was part of the Central Provinces and Berar province. The district was formed in 1862 and was named after the Wardha river. The city of Wardha was a major center of the Indian independence movement. It was the headquarters of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) during the Quit India Movement in 1942. Mahatma Gandhi also stayed in Wardha for a long period of time and established various institutions including the Sevagram Ashram.
