Navi Mumbai, also known as New Mumbai, is a planned city located in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is situated on the west coast of the Arabian Sea and is a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Navi Mumbai was developed in 1972 to decongest the crowded city of Mumbai and provide a better living environment for its residents. The city covers an area of 344 sq km and has a population of over 1.2 million people.
The idea of developing a satellite city to Mumbai was first proposed by the Government of Maharashtra in the 1960s. The plan was to create a new city that would provide a better living environment for the residents of Mumbai and would also serve as a counter-magnet to the city's rapid growth. In 1971, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) was established by the Government of Maharashtra to develop Navi Mumbai.
Navi Mumbai was developed in four phases. The first phase began in 1972 and ended in 1979. During this phase, the infrastructure was developed, and the foundation for the city was laid. This included the construction of roads, water supply systems, drainage systems, and the electrification of the city. The second phase of development began in 1980 and ended in 1989. During this phase, the residential and commercial areas of the city were developed. The third phase began in 1990 and ended in 2000. This phase focused on developing the transportation infrastructure of the city, including the construction of the Navi Mumbai Metro. The fourth and final phase of development began in 2000 and is ongoing. This phase focuses on developing the remaining areas of the city and improving the quality of life of its residents.
Navi Mumbai is situated on the west coast of India and is surrounded by the Arabian Sea to the west and the Western Ghats to the east. The city is divided into two parts by the Thane Creek, which flows from the east to the west. The city's coastline is around 30 km long, and it has several beaches, including Vashi Beach, Belapur Beach, and Nerul Beach.
Navi Mumbai has a tropical climate, with hot and humid summers and mild winters. The monsoon season in Navi Mumbai starts in June and lasts until September. During this time, the city receives heavy rainfall, and floods are common in low-lying areas. The average annual rainfall in Navi Mumbai is around 2,500 mm.
Navi Mumbai has a diverse population, with people from all parts of India living here. The majority of the population is Hindu, followed by Muslims and Christians. Marathi is the official language of the state of Maharashtra, but Hindi and English are also widely spoken in Navi Mumbai.
Navi Mumbai is a rapidly developing city and has emerged as a major commercial hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The city has a well-developed infrastructure and is home to several industrial parks, special economic zones, and software technology parks. Some of the major industries in Navi Mumbai include manufacturing, IT, finance, and healthcare.
Navi Mumbai has a well-developed transportation system, with several modes of transportation available. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Mumbai-Goa Highway, and Sion-Panvel Expressway are the major highways that connect Navi Mumbai to other parts of Maharashtra and India. The city has a well-developed local train network, with three suburban railway lines that connect Navi Mumbai to Mumbai and Thane. The Navi Mumbai Metro is currently under construction and is expected to be operational by 2022.
