Alibaug was developed under the Naval Chief of the Maratha ruler Shivaji. It is a coastal city and is famous for the white sandy seaside which is often unaffected and cleaner than the Mumbai seaside. Alibaug city has a history dating back to the 17th century. Most of the land area at that time was under the sea. Coconut and betel nut gardens were on the coast. It was earlier known as Colaba, which is credited to the fort of Colaba which was built by Shivaji in 1680. Alibag is the headquarters of Raigad district Raigad district was first named Kulaba. At that time, Israel was named Ali. He was a rich man and had many mango and coconut plantations in his gardens. Therefore, the locals used to call the place Alichi Bagh. Which now came to be known as Alibaug.
