The majority of the population is Hindu, followed by Muslims and Christians. The official language of the city is Telugu, but English and Hindi are also spoken widely.

The famous Kuchipudi dance form originated in the nearby village of Kuchipudi. The city is also home to several famous musicians, including the legendary Veena player, Emani Sankara Sastry.

The city celebrates several festivals throughout the year. The most important festival in the city is the Vizianagaram Maharajah's birthday, which is celebrated in May every year. The festival is a grand affair, with a procession of elephants and horses through the city. Other major festivals celebrated in the city are Diwali, Dussehra, and Ugadi.
