It is situated on the banks of river Godavari in east Godavari district of the state and is the seventh most populous city in the state. During British rule, Rajahmundry district was formed in the Madras Presidency in 1823. It was reconstituted in 1859 and divided into Godavari and Krishna districts. Rajahmundry was the headquarters of Godavari district, which was divided into East Godavari and West Godavari districts in 1925. When Godavari district was bifurcated, Kakinada became the headquarters of East Godavari and Eluru became the headquarters of West Godavari. It is administered under Rajahmundry revenue division. The city is known for its floriculture, history, culture, agriculture, economy, tourism and its heritage. It is known as the "cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh". It is believed to be the birthplace of Telugu language

The city was named after king Naren, ruler of the 11th century Chalukya dynasty who ruled the city. The name of the city was officially changed from the first name Rajahmundry to Rajmahendravaram.

The city is home to many scholars and writers who are famous throughout the state. Everything right from beautiful backwaters, important temples and museums. The iconic Pulasa fish is a unique feature of the city. It is found here from August to December.
