Perambalur district has a total area of 1,752 square kilometers and is bordered by Tiruchirappalli district to the south, Ariyalur district to the east, Cuddalore district to the northeast, and Salem district to the northwest. The district is predominantly flat, with an average elevation of 77 meters above sea level. The district is drained by the Kollidam river and its tributaries. The climate of Perambalur is tropical and semi-arid, with hot summers and moderate winters. The monsoon season usually lasts from October to December.

History

Perambalur has a rich history that dates back to the Sangam era. The region was ruled by various dynasties, including the Cholas, Pallavas, and the Vijayanagara Empire. The region was later conquered by the Muslim rulers of the Bahmani Sultanate, who were later succeeded by the Bijapur Sultanate. In the 17th century, the region was ruled by the Marathas and was later annexed by the British in the 19th century.

As of the 2011 census, Perambalur district had a population of 5,20,243, with a sex ratio of 1,007 females for every 1,000 males. The literacy rate was 72.19%, which is lower than the state average of 80.33%. The district is predominantly rural, with agriculture being the primary occupation of the people. Tamil is the main language spoken in the district.

Perambalur district has a predominantly agricultural economy, with paddy, sugarcane, and groundnuts being the major crops. The district is also known for its limestone reserves, which are used in the cement industry. The Handloom industry is also prominent in the district, and many people are involved in weaving and embroidery.
