The district is divided into four taluks - Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Kattumannarkoil, and Panruti.

The district is predominantly agricultural, with rice being the main crop grown in the region. The coastal areas of the district are also known for their fisheries, with several fishing villages dotting the coastline.

Cuddalore district is home to several festivals and fairs throughout the year. Some of the major festivals celebrated in the region include Pongal, Diwali, and Christmas. The annual Chidambaram Natyanjali Dance Festival, which is held at the Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, is a major cultural event in the region.
