During the colonial era, Cuddalore was a major center of trade and commerce due to its strategic location on the Coromandel Coast. Cuddalore district is situated between 11.45° and 12.15° North latitude and 78.55° and 79.45° East longitude. The district has a coastline of 57 km and is home to several rivers, including the Pennaiyar, the Kedilam, and the Uppanar. The district is divided into four taluks - Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Kattumannarkoil, and Panruti.

The district is predominantly agricultural, with rice being the main crop grown in the region. The coastal areas of the district are also known for their fisheries, with several fishing villages dotting the coastline.

Cuddalore district has a rich cultural heritage, with a blend of Tamil and French influences. The district is home to several temples, including the famous Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, which is one of the most important temples in the region.

The district is also known for its traditional art forms, including Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form that originated in Tamil Nadu. The region is also famous for its folk dances, such as Kavadi Aattam and Poikal Kudirai Aattam.

Cuddalore district is home to several festivals and fairs throughout the year. Some of the major festivals celebrated in the region include Pongal, Diwali, and Christmas. The annual Chidambaram Natyanjali Dance Festival, which is held at the Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, is a major cultural event in the region.
