The district covers an area of 4,189 square kilometers and is situated at an altitude of 150 meters above sea level. The district has a predominantly hilly terrain, with the Western Ghats running through the district. The Vaigai River flows through the district, and the district has a tropical climate with hot summers and mild winters.

As per the 2011 Census, the district had a population of 1,339,101, with a sex ratio of 1,008 females per 1000 males. The literacy rate of the district is 77.99%, with male literacy at 85.52% and female literacy at 70.33%.

Agriculture is the primary occupation of the people in Sivaganga, and the district is known for its production of paddy, coconut, banana, and sugarcane. The district is also home to several small-scale industries, including matchbox, brick-making, and handloom weaving.
