South Dinajpur, also known as Dakshin Dinajpur, is a district located in the state of West Bengal in India. It was created in 1947 when the former Dinajpur district was divided into two parts, with the northern part becoming part of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and the southern part becoming part of West Bengal. South Dinajpur is situated in the northern part of West Bengal and shares its borders with the Indian states of Bihar and Jharkhand, as well as with the Bangladeshi districts of Pabna, Rajshahi, and Naogaon.

Geography

South Dinajpur covers an area of around 2,183 square kilometers and is located at an altitude of 75 meters above sea level. The district is situated in the basin of the River Ganges and is characterized by undulating terrain with occasional hills. The major rivers flowing through the district are the Punarbhaba, the Tangon, and the Atreyee. The climate of South Dinajpur is tropical and experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon season.

History

South Dinajpur has a rich history and was once part of the ancient Pundravardhana kingdom. It was also ruled by the Gupta Empire and the Pal Dynasty. During the medieval period, the region was part of the Bengal Sultanate and later the Mughal Empire. The British East India Company annexed the region in the early 19th century, and it became part of British India. After India gained independence in 1947, South Dinajpur became part of West Bengal.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the population of South Dinajpur was around 1,670,931. The district has a literacy rate of 62.66%, which is lower than the national average. The majority of the population in South Dinajpur are Bengali-speaking Hindus, but there is also a significant Muslim population. Other communities include Santhal, Rajbanshi, and Oraon.

Agriculture is the main occupation in South Dinajpur, and the district is known for its production of rice, jute, sugarcane, and vegetables. The district also has a thriving cottage industry, with artisans producing handicrafts made of bamboo, wood, and brass.
