These tribes had their own unique cultures and traditions and lived in relative isolation until the arrival of the British in the late 19th century.

During the British rule, the area was known as the Subansiri Frontier Tract and was administered by the British Indian government through the Assam province. After India's independence, the area became a part of the newly-formed state of Assam. In 1972, Arunachal Pradesh was established as a separate state, and Lower Subansiri became one of its districts.
