The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India and is believed to have been built by the Moon God, Som, as a penance for his sins. The temple has a long and tumultuous history, as it was destroyed and rebuilt several times by various rulers over the centuries. The temple was originally built in the 4th century AD by the Gurjara-Pratiharas, but it was destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni in the 11th century. The temple was later rebuilt by the Chalukyas of Gujarat, but it was again destroyed by Alauddin Khilji in the 14th century.
