History 

Thiruvananthapuram has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the 10th century when it was ruled by the Ays, a Dravidian dynasty. Later, the city came under the rule of the Venad Kingdom, which was established by the Travancore royal family in the 17th century. The kingdom was one of the wealthiest and most powerful states in India during the British colonial period. In 1947, the kingdom became part of the newly independent India and in 1956, the state of Kerala was formed with Thiruvananthapuram as its capital.

Geography and Climate 

Thiruvananthapuram is located on the west coast of India, on the southwestern tip of the Indian peninsula. The city has an average elevation of 16 feet (5 meters) above sea level and covers an area of 214.86 square kilometers. Thiruvananthapuram has a tropical climate with heavy rainfall during the monsoon season from June to September. The average temperature in the city ranges from 27 °C to 32 °C.

Culture and Festivals 

Thiruvananthapuram is known for its vibrant culture and diverse festivals. The city has a strong tradition of art, literature, music, and dance, which is reflected in its festivals and events. Some of the popular festivals celebrated in the city include Onam, Vishu, Navaratri, and the International Film Festival of Kerala.

Onam is the biggest festival in Kerala and is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Thiruvananthapuram. The festival is a 10-day long celebration that marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. People decorate their homes with flower carpets, prepare traditional feasts, and participate in cultural events and games.

Vishu is another important festival celebrated in Thiruvananthapuram. It is the New Year according to the Malayalam calendar and is celebrated in April. The festival is marked by the Vishukkani, which is a ritual arrangement of auspicious items like rice, coconut, and flowers.

Navaratri is a nine-day long festival that is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. The festival is celebrated with great fervor in Thiruvananthapuram, with people participating in cultural events, music, and dance performances.
