Monitor lizards can be seen amidst rocky swings along the lake, here pythons, king cobras and flying lizards can also be seen. Also, about 260 species of birds can be found in Periyar. They also include darters, cormorants, ibis, gray herons, mynas, flycatchers, orioles, wooden pigeons, kingfishers, kites, osprey, thrushes, and blue winged parakeets. There are some tribal villages around Periyar, which are worth seeing.
