During the British era, Palamu was a part of the Chota Nagpur Division of Bihar. The region played an important role in the freedom struggle, with several leaders from the region participating in the movement. After independence, Palamu became a part of the newly formed state of Jharkhand.

Geography

Palamu is located in the southwestern part of Jharkhand, bordering the state of Chhattisgarh. The district covers an area of 5043.82 square kilometres and is primarily hilly and forested. The district is home to several rivers, including the Koel, Auranga, and Burha, which provide irrigation to the region. The region also experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with the monsoon season lasting from June to September.

As per the 2011 census, Palamu had a population of 1,939,869, with a sex ratio of 927 females for every 1000 males. The literacy rate of the district is 62.59%, with a male literacy rate of 73.16% and a female literacy rate of 51.11%. The major religions in the district are Hinduism and Islam, with a small Christian and Buddhist population as well.

Agriculture is the primary occupation in Palamu, with rice, wheat, and maize being the main crops grown in the region. The district is also known for its forest produce, including sal, teak, and bamboo. Mining is another major industry in the district, with coal being the primary mineral extracted. Palamu is also home to several small-scale industries, including handloom weaving and handicrafts.
