The town was established in 1847 by Sir Charles Henry Netarhat, who was the commissioner of Chotanagpur at that time. During the British Raj, Netarhat was a popular summer resort for the British officers, who would escape the sweltering heat of the plains and enjoy the cool climate and serene surroundings of the town. The town was also a hub for the Jesuit missionaries, who established several schools and educational institutions in Netarhat.
