The city is surrounded by the Chota Nagpur plateau on all sides. The Damodar River flows through the city, and the Panchet Dam is located about 50 kilometers from Dhanbad.

According to the 2011 Census of India, the population of Dhanbad was 1,162,472, making it the second most populous city in Jharkhand after Ranchi. The majority of the population is Hindu, followed by Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs. The literacy rate of Dhanbad is 78.49%.
