Jyotirmath, also known as Joshimath, is a small town situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Jyotirmath is one of the four cardinal mathas or monasteries established by the Adi Shankaracharya, a great Hindu philosopher and reformer who lived in the 8th century AD. 

History

Jyotirmath has a rich history dating back to the 8th century AD. According to legends, Adi Shankaracharya, a great Hindu philosopher, established the matha in Jyotirmath in order to spread the teachings of Vedanta and Advaita Vedanta, two of the most important schools of Hindu philosophy. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have stayed in Jyotirmath for some time before moving on to other parts of India. The matha became an important center of learning and scholarship, and many renowned scholars and philosophers visited the matha over the years.

In the 14th century AD, the matha was attacked and destroyed by a Muslim invader named Timur. However, the matha was rebuilt in the 18th century AD by the king of Garhwal, Raja Bhoj Pal. The matha has since then been an important center of learning, and many scholars and philosophers have studied and taught at the matha.
