Jyotirmath, also known as Joshimath, is a small town situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. The town is located at an altitude of 6150 feet above sea level and is a popular tourist destination due to its picturesque beauty and religious significance. Jyotirmath is one of the four cardinal mathas or monasteries established by the Adi Shankaracharya, a great Hindu philosopher and reformer who lived in the 8th century AD. 

History

Jyotirmath has a rich history dating back to the 8th century AD. According to legends, Adi Shankaracharya, a great Hindu philosopher, established the matha in Jyotirmath in order to spread the teachings of Vedanta and Advaita Vedanta, two of the most important schools of Hindu philosophy. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have stayed in Jyotirmath for some time before moving on to other parts of India. The matha became an important center of learning and scholarship, and many renowned scholars and philosophers visited the matha over the years.

In the 14th century AD, the matha was attacked and destroyed by a Muslim invader named Timur. However, the matha was rebuilt in the 18th century AD by the king of Garhwal, Raja Bhoj Pal. The matha has since then been an important center of learning, and many scholars and philosophers have studied and taught at the matha.

Jyotirmath is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. The town is located at an altitude of 6150 feet above sea level and is surrounded by the Himalayas on all sides. The town is located on the banks of the Alaknanda River, which is one of the major tributaries of the Ganges River.   • Kalpavriksha: Kalpavriksha is an ancient tree located near Jyotirmath and is believed to be more than 1200 years old. The tree is considered to be a wish-fulfilling tree and is visited by many pilgrims and tourists.
  • Vishnuprayag: Vishnuprayag is a confluence of two rivers, the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga, located near Jyotirmath. The confluence is named after Lord Vishnu and is considered to be a sacred site by Hindus.
