South Tripura is one of the four districts in Tripura and is located in the southern part of the state. It covers an area of 2152.30 square kilometers and has a population of around 875,000 people. The district is home to many indigenous tribes like the Tripuris, Reangs, Jamatias, Noatias, and Halams. The district headquarters is located in Belonia, which is the second-largest city in Tripura after Agartala.The district is known for its beautiful landscapes, including hills, valleys, rivers, and forests. The Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is located in South Tripura, which is home to many endangered species of animals and birds. The sanctuary covers an area of 18.53 square kilometers and is a popular tourist destination. The district also has many historical places, including the Ujjayanta Palace, the Neermahal Palace, and the Tripura Sundari Temple.

Geography

South Tripura district is situated in the valley of the Haora River, which flows through the district from east to west. The district has a tropical climate with heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September.

Demographics

As per the 2011 census, the population of South Tripura district was 876,613, with a population density of 407 persons per square kilometer. The district has a predominantly tribal population, with the majority belonging to the Tripuri tribe. Other tribes residing in the district include the Reang, Jamatia, Noatia, and Halam tribes. The district also has a significant Bengali population.

Culture

The culture of South Tripura district is a blend of tribal and non-tribal cultures. The traditional dance forms of the Tripuri tribe, such as the Goria dance, are popular in the district. The Reang tribe is known for its Cheraw dance, which involves rhythmic clapping and the use of bamboo sticks. The district also has a rich tradition of handicrafts, including bamboo and cane products, pottery, and handloom textiles.

Economy

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the people of South Tripura district. The district is known for its production of rice, sugarcane, jute, and mustard. The district also has a significant horticulture industry, with the production of fruits such as pineapple, orange, and lemon. The district is home to the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation (TIDC) Industrial Estate, which houses several small and medium-sized enterprises.
