Adilabad was earlier called Edulapuram. The district was named as Adilabad. It was named after Bijapur, the ruler of Ali Adil Shah. Which was its headquarters. Today, Adilabad is the second largest district of Telangana. The history of Adilabad is linked to the oldest past of Gondwana and Berar regions. This region offers the distinction of being ruled by several North Indian dynasties including Maurya, Bhonsle Raja of Nagpur and Mughal.
It was part of the South Indian rulers who belonged to the dynasties of the Imad Shahis of Satavahana, Rashtrakuta, Vakataka, Kakatiya, Chalukya and Berar. Adilabad gained maximum prominence during the time of the Mughals. Aurangzeb, known as the Viceroy of Deccan for taking care of the State of the South, Aurangzeb made sure of taking care of the economy of the region of Deccan. Dokra (tribal metal work) and serene painting and handicrafts are famous worldwide.
